Back in the Summer of 2011, we had a little earthquake.  It seemed like not a big deal and we locals all joked about it, but then in the next couple of days we realized that not only had there been some damage, but it was significant enough to close the Washington Monument.

Awkward.

The National Cathedral was also damaged and the peaks from three spires were knocked off.  Some fell to the roof below; some hit the ground; fortunately no one was hurt.  They've been making progress to fix the damage and the pinnacles are now ensconced with scaffolding while they repair them.  In the meantime, the peaks that did fall are displayed in the courtyard in the front of the building.  On the bright side, this is as close as I'll ever get to seeing what they look like up there.
