Before Christmas, I picked up this lamp on sale at IKEA, thinking it would make a nice seasonal decoration for the house. Then I realized that in the decade or so we've lived in this house, every time we've come home to a dark house, we've had to open the door, walk into the center of the room and then grope around in the dark for the hanging chain that turns on the ceiling light. With our current assortment of toys, shoes and cats on the floor, the chances of breaking an ankle have increased ten fold. So when I plugged this snowball looking light into the outlet controlled by the switch right next to the front door and came home after dark for the first time, all of the sudden, a light went on over my head. And that's not a Gestalt reference; it was just the first time I could see.
