Coming Soon to a Home Near You

Posted on 12/16/2009 05:16:00 PM
Last weekend we had our church Christmas party where Santa made an appearance...

But looked strangely familiar...

Yes, that's The KingofHearts playing Santa Claus.

For many years in our ward, it was almost a tradition that The KoH play Santa Claus at the Christmas party. At first it worked fine for us. We didn't have kids back then and, not to brag or anything, but The KoH is an awesome Santa. Unlike many adults, he is really tuned into the kids in our church and knows all of their names, remembers what they like, can understand them when they speak, you know... stuff to which most forty year old men don't pay much attention.

The first year after we'd moved into this house was also the first year he was asked to play Santa Claus at the party and I sat off to the side watching him. We'd only been there a few months, but almost every single kid hopped down off Santa's lap and walked over to his or her parents and said in awe and wonderment, "Momma Santa KNEW MY NAME!" I sure as heck didn't know any of their names. I remember thinking for the first time that this might just be more than a practice marriage. (Of course then he came home, farted, threw his clothes on the floor and ruined the moment, but at least it was a moment.)

The Dormouse's first Christmas... and also her first Daddy Claus Santa Claus.

In recent years as The Dormouse has become more sentient, he hasn't been asked to play Santa, mainly because it kinda cramps the style of any Dad who tells his kids about Santa only to have those same kids sit on Santa's lap and look into the eyes of the right jolly old elf and realize, "Dude, Santa's just MY DAD."

This year, however, when we showed up to the party, they were short one Santa. The party planning person had expected that one of the missionaries would do it and then promptly forgot to tell him about it, I think. (Which, coincidentally, also happened with the request to have the Primary children perform a musical number at the party -- the only reason I was even there in the first place.) When the missionaries showed up and she told the one she expected to do it about her plans, he told her, "Um... it's against the mission rules for us to even pick up kids... I'm pretty sure putting them all on my lap is a no-no." So she begged The KoH to pinch hit and he agreed. For the kids.

We knew, however, that The Dormouse wouldn't be fooled by the Daddy-as-Santa costume. So I did the only thing I could do: make up some lame, cockamamie story about how Santa doesn't really have the time to show up for everyone's church Christmas party because that would just be too much time away from ordering his elves back to their sweatshop after a smoke break to pound out more dollies for Susy and skates for Johnny. So Daddy was going to play Santa, but she shouldn't tell any of the other kids because it would ruin the surprise. The Santa at the mall, however, THAT Santa is totally the real guy. Get it?

She managed to accomplish her task well, save it be for the mock surprise when she got to her turn to talk to Santa and she exclaimed, "Oh my! It's SANTA!" in the most manifestly counterfeit voice possible and then JUMPED into his lap. Whatever. The other kids were too hopped up on sugar to even notice.

I still can't figure if The Caterpillar was on to him or not. But all she cared about was getting a "tiny candy cane" so I'm not sure it made a difference one way or another.

She was happy.

Then the next morning, we went to see the really real Santa.

See? This is totally the real guy.

(It's a darn good thing this one had a real beard.)

Yes, they are cute pictures. For the record, I love them. But what I was secretly hoping for is something more along the lines
of this.

These will have to do though:

Christmas Barn

...and the whole barn from yesterday. I think it's hilarious that the National Zoo has a barn and farm animals, but for some people who grew up in the city, cows and sheep might be almost as exotic as zebras and penguins. Plus, you get to pet them... no one ever lets you pet a zebra.

I love kids' imagination. But you'd think maybe they imagine some rules of the road as well to avoid such situations.

Also... I'm thinking about bringing back driving blankets. They look so comfortable.

Zoology

Last week a very nice person contacted me to see if I was interested in attending an event in exchange for writing about it on this weblog. I've been getting more and more of these kinds of emails lately and in general, I ignore them. Even the ones that don't seem really sketchy make my head hurt when I think about the big ol' can 'o worms that could open up. My husband still thinks that one day I'll run enough ads on this site for him to quit his job and live in the manner he's become accustomed to (hint: that ain't much) but I hate to break it to him that a person who is too lazy to even run a Google search to figure out the process for adding ads to a website is probably not going to have him living in much more than a van down by the river. So maybe he should concentrate on me not getting fired from my job due to spending too much time on-line.

Speaking of time on-line, I've been trying to spend much less time there recently. I feel like Codex in The Guild, who keeps a post it note on her computer that says, "Limit time online: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 hours per day." Reference too esoteric? I rest my case.

Anyway, we got the tickets and then headed out to see:

ZooLights!

For those who don't live in Washington and are not intimately familiar with this FONZ (Friends of the National Zoo - why can't my work have a cool acronym like that?) event, here's the run down:

Have family coming in for the holidays? Looking for a fun winter break activity? Children and grandparent alike will enjoy ZooLights, the National Zoo’s 3rd annual winter celebration, December 4-13 (Friday through Sunday nights) and December 18-January 2 (every night except Dec. 24, 25, and 31) from 6-8:30 p.m. ZooLights features dazzling light sculptures, keeper talks, strolling musicians, costumed characters, and performances by Flumpa® and Friends Live (Dec. 26-29) and Blue Sky Puppet Theater (all other nights). Special activities and giveaways are planned for Dec. 12 (Giant “Zootrition” Night), Dec. 18 (Date Night), Dec. 19 (SunTrust Night), and Dec. 26 (Hair Cuttery Night). Bring a canned good and receive discounts at the gift shop. Tickets are only $5 for Friends of the National Zoo members and $8 for nonmembers. On select Military Nights, tickets are free for military families. Proceeds support the National Zoo. Visit www.fonz.org/zoolights.htm for tickets and details.

I've lived here a long time and so far, we've never had the chance to go see ZooLights at the National Zoo. So it was a real treat to get the chance to attend.

That's us... well the "us" that consists of The KingofHearts, The Dormouse, The Caterpillar and me behind the camera. A few days ago, The KoH picked up a camera while we were decorating the tree and started obsessively taking pictures of me. When I asked what he was doing, he said, "I recently realized that if you ever died, I would probably forget what you looked like because we own no pictures of you; you're always the one taking the pictures." And then he proceeded to take about forty of the worst photos of me I've ever seen in my life. They may or may not have been 'accidentally' deleted.

But I digress.

ZooLights has some of the traditional Christmas wrap-the-lights-around-all-the-trees-and-buildings-lightingness that you can expect from any Christmas light display, but throws in a bit of education as well, which is pretty impressive because who in their right mind would arrange Christmas lights in the form of a Naked Mole Rat? Not me, that's who. And before you ask, no, I did not get a picture of the Naked Mole Rat lights... believe me, I've been kicking myself about it since I got home. I did, however, get a picture of some of the other members of the animal kingdom.

The butterfly kingdom, for example:

Because in this scene butterflies bigger than all the flowers SHOULD have a kingdom, right?

Later the girls enjoyed trying to float like a butterfly.

Then we saw the cheetah triplets (maybe this how that Disney show got started):

In real life, this looks like a cheetah jumping, but you know, a three second exposure is as good as a carbon copy when you're dealing with moving light displays.

Off near the Ape House, a herd of elephants could be found. (Wait... is it herd? A quick Google check reveals you can, in fact, say herd of elephants, but also acceptable is memory of elephants, and parade of elephants. I'm liking memory best.)

Off near the Ape House, a memory of elephants could be found.

We tried to warn them that they were being stalked by tigers, but they moved rather slowly:

This chameleon seems to have a blue tree growing out of his head... but at least he still manages to get some dinner.

The flamingos, apparently, had gotten lost somewhere between Florida and the North Pole (wait, aren't flamingos not from either place?):

The octopus wore glasses. All the better to see you with, my dear:

Wait... wrong story. Here's the right one:

The manta rays swam around the trees... looking for Steve Irwin, no doubt.

Yes, I know that joke was in poor taste.

Komodo dragons roamed around looking for something to eat - somebody should have told them about the chameleons.

While the panda bear prepared to say goodbye:

But the best thing at ZooLights wasn't the lights at all.

It was this:

A giant snow globe with a human in a panda suit inside. Could this night get any better?

It could, if the panda suited human dances and lets your children high five him/her through the "glass."

Seriously, this is someone's JOB!

So that's it folks. ZooLights! Get there before it goes away.

Tree Hunters

Posted on 12/10/2009 02:30:00 PM

On Saturday last, we woke up to find the earliest snow we've had since we've lived here. And since the greater part of Washington only sees the tiniest bit of snow as a signal to run to the store and purchase vast amounts of bread, milk and toilet paper, then return home to shutter up the windows and to wait out the inclement weather for what could literally be hours before the roads are clear again, we decided to throw caution to the wind and go tree hunting. What better day to do it right? So we bundled up the girls in double coats, gloves, hats and their warmest clothing and set off to find a tree as The KingofHearts declared, "This is tree huntin' weather!" We then drove two hours in the storm out to our favorite tree farm for the quintessential experience of cutting down our own tree in the snow. How often do you get a chance like that?

It was beautiful, idyllic and no one could wait until we got there, least of all The Dormouse, who talked non-stop about picking out the tree and then building a snowman. Then once we arrived, the first thing we did was step out of the car and The Dormouse ran to experience the snowbound hill, running hell-bent for election through the snow. It was the perfect Norman Rockwell moment.

The only thing wrong with Norman Rockwell paintings is that they are but a moment of a larger moving picture and you never actually get to see the next frame in the scene. In this particular film, the next scene was the one where The Dormouse immediately got her feet completely wet in the very wet snow and then complained about being cold for the next thirty minutes... all the way up the hill to the trees, all the way through the trees, all the time we were searching for a tree. She complained so much, in fact, that we couldn't even get her to settle down to help choose a tree or clear our thoughts long enough to choose one ourselves. We tried telling her to cowboy up, to shake it off. We wrapped her in a blanket and told her it would be just a little bit and could she just hold on long enough to get up the hill, choose a tree and get back down then we'd get in the car and turn on the heater, but ultimately, it was all for naught. When she finally began crying icicle tears, we decided it was time to give up and bring her back to the car. We then purchased a pre-cut tree off the lot and left.

Not quite the Norman Rockwell Christmas experience we were looking for.

Take My Wife... Please

Posted on 12/09/2009 11:36:00 AM In:
The Dormouse is just getting to where she understands humor well enough to make up a joke and have it be funny to others who get the nuances and subtleties of humor that appeals to adults. Hence, there have been few entries in the "Kid Jokes" section of this website recently. But I am pleased to announce that the era of kid jokes entries may be back.

Last night as we were driving in the car, The Dormouse told a knock knock joke that actually made us laugh and we praised her on her foray into the world of stand up comedy.

Like dominoes fall with each successive tumble, this of course made The KingofHearts tell the only knock knock joke he ever remembers and, not very coincidentally, the one I possibly find the least funny and most annoying.

Knock, knock.

Who's there?

Banana.

Banana who?

Knock, knock.

Who's there?

Banana.

Banana who?

Knock, knock.

Who's there?

Banana.

Banana who?

Knock, knock.

Who's there?

Orange.

*heavy sigh* Orange who?

Orange you glad I didn't say 'banana' again?

Oh that's just the least of things I'm glad of.

Anyway, The Caterpillar decided she wanted to get in on the action and when his twenty-minute knock, knock joke was through, she decided to tell her own version:

Caterpillar: "Knock, knock."

Us: "Who's there?"

"Banana."

"Banana who?"

*pause* "Corn.... bye bye!"

It's at least as funny as the banana/orange joke.

Walking in a Winter Wonderland

Posted on 11/30/2009 05:56:00 PM In: ,

So, the big event that I alluded to yesterday was that we got tickets to Ice! at the National Harbor. How can I explain Ice! to those who haven't seen it? Ice sculptures on crack seems about the best description. You walk into this giant tent where they herd you into a line and hand out parkas. Then you walk into another section of tent where they've lowered the temperature to about nine degrees Fahrenheit.

Then you walk through this:

There are "ten different holiday scenes made from two million pounds of ice, including a life-sized Santa's Workshop, a penguin village... and even ice slides that stand more than two stories tall!
"

We saw monuments:

Rode a life sized horse-drawn sleigh:

Got a sneak peak at the night before Christmas:

Then we headed up to the North Pole:

And hung out with the penguins in their igloo:

After which, we walked through an ice tunnel that reminded me of an old
Six Million Dollar Man episode (ooo! finally found a picture):

Then we entered the room with the ice slides, which was a ball for all of us. Except, perhaps for The Caterpillar, who really wanted to go down the slide, so they put her down on her back where she moved six inches and then lay there like a slug.

So the Gaylord employee reached down, shoved her at the shoulder and pushed her down the slide about three feet... where she lay there like a slug.

In a perfect world, I suppose her mother could have gone up to get her, but she was busy laughing and taking pictures. (More fodder for that Mother of the Year award bio.)

So finally, the guy at the bottom went about half way up the slide, grabbed her by the ankle and dragged her down to the bottom. Where she lay there like a slug.

And then her mother wiped tiny-frozen-icicle-tears from her cheeks.

Here's the sentry to Santa's toy factory:

Where Santa's elves were hard at work:

And The Dormouse made a friend:

Then we entered the religious portion of the evening, with a ten foot tall angel:

Some pretty cool ice-lights:

And a life-sized nativity scene:

I'm not sure I knew what to expect going in but we had a wonderful time. I'd suggest getting tickets ahead of time. I'm sure it was more crowded over the Thanksgiving weekend, but this thing's been getting a lot of press apparently so you might want to plan ahead. It was a fun way to ring in the Christmas season.

Oh, and that concludes my NaBloPoMo - post a photo every day contributions. My blog thanks you, my camera thanks you, and I thank you. (Name that musical reference.)
